I’ve been daydreaming of hiking up some mountain, setting up camp on the summit, and waking up to pink skies and sunrise. Thing is, I’ve never actually been backpacking before. So, to put my interest to the test, and to give all this new gear a spin, I planned a sort of impromptu solo camping trip…
The thing with bungee jumps that you don’t think about is that it’s not just one ‘jump’. You fall, you come up and then you fall all over again.
Immediately I knew, with my top off stumbling along the coral, that we had made a mistake.
I’d been in Parismina a week. And it was nothing like I had expected. As my first trip ‘travelling’ it was quite a shock to the system and I had not properly adjusted my expectations. I felt isolated. We were in a remote and small village, I couldn’t speak the language, and I was really struggling with the physical volunteer work (in part due to jetlag). I had romanticised the volunteer experience, and it just wasn’t what I was expecting.
It wasn’t anything like I expected. In fact, it was actually a tough three weeks. Physically, yes, but really mentally and emotionally too.
I like to think that by now referring to myself as blasian I am taking ownership of who I am and of my identity. A lot of who I am today comes from my experiences of my family’s cultures and growing up as a woman of colour. But I can’t lie, it’s still something that makes me feel uncomfortable.
